Background and History of the Event PDF Print E-mail

Inspired by participation in the 1984 Cape Argus Cycle Tour, a group of cyclists decided to form a Pedal Power organization in the Eastern Cape.  The purpose was to develop cycling locally and to start an event similar to the Cape Argus.

The Eastern Province Pedal Power Association was formed in 1985.  The Eastern Province Herald was approached to sponsor a high profile cycling event and The Herald Cycle Tour took place for the first time in 1986 with 350 participants. The Herald Cycle Tour has taken place annually since then without a break to the present.  Just over 3500 cyclists took part in the 2008 Herald VW Cycle Tour - we are looking forward to a huge growth for 2009.

Rob Rudman, Peter Dickason and Tony Lutz were the conveners of the 1st five events.  Rob and Peter have been back as conveners with Mark Bradley of Round Table No 8 for the past six events and were joined by Shane Bradfield from Leisure Cycle Tours & Adventures to convene the 2008 event.  Shane has now taken over the mantle of Race Director with his team since the 2009 edition of the Herald VW Cycle Tour.
